For now, though, we're focusing on the simple art of relaxation.
In a massage, we experience a caring, safe touch -- an invitation to relax. Whether Swedish, deep tissue, therapeutic, craniosacral, myofascial release, or any other modality, these kinds of touch transform us to a new place -- change disharmony to tranquility. They allow us to step back from the edge and provide a sanctuary from chaos -- a much nicer place to live.
Beyond the massage table…bringing ourselves back to a place of continued relaxation, settling into a life with less stress, fewer moments of angst, and a sense of rightness even in adversity -- this is a choice that will bring us natural health and well-being.
But…is simple relaxation a good enough reason to get a massage?
The science says yes. During a massage, your body enters a state of "relaxation response." Your heart and breathing rate slow, your blood pressure goes down, and your muscles relax. Your body responds with an increase in the available level of serotonin (a chemical in the body that positively affects emotions and thoughts) and a decrease in cortisol (a steroid hormone that helps the body respond to stress).
