New Year, New Skin

Welcome to the new year! The holidays are over, and January is staring you in the face. Quite literally. Too much partying, too many late nights, or just an overkill of spicy food? Ugh, your skin is showing it! However, your new skin for a new year is just around the corner. How can that be?

Did you know that your skin amazingly, and naturally, renews itself? But with a small bit of help from you, your new skin can go from average to stellar in as little as 28 days. Read on to learn about your new skincare routine for the new year!

Skin Renewal and Regeneration

Given that your skin is the largest organ in your body, it deserves more than the obligatory splish, splash, and sploosh that you probably give it on a daily basis. Your skin is made up of various layers including the outer layer (epidermis), the middle layer (dermis), and the fatty layer (subcutis).

But the first outer layer of your skin (the stratum corneum) is what you want to deal with more than anything else. This layer contains those dead skin cells that your skin has discarded during its 28-day cycle, and which you have no further use for. This process, called desquamation, rids the skin of dead cells, as new skin cells are produced in the basal layer, the deepest layer of the epidermis. Although they tend to fall off your skin naturally, establishing a daily skincare routine that maximizes your skin’s potential to be glowing, not just average, is an excellent way to start the new year!

How to Maximize a Great Skincare Routine

The order of things matters. And skincare routines are no exception. Here’s what we recommend for your new year daily skincare routine:

  • Cleanse
  • Tone
  • Exfoliate (weekly)

Now, let’s take a closer look at each of those steps!

Cleanse for Clean Skin

What does cleansing mean? If you want to get your skin really clean gently first wash with warm water, not hot. Hot water can dry out and irritate your skin. You may cause damage to the epidermis, and then you won’t be able to lock essential moisture into your skin. Washing with water is just the first step. To cleanse your skin properly, use a cleanser that digs in deep and removes all the dirt, grime, and mess of the day.

Our Gel Facial Cleanser is the ideal candidate for deep cleansing! Suitable for both dry and oily skin, it contains lavender and tea tree essential oils which are pleasant and gentle to your skin, as well as bringing the fighting power of anti-bacterial agents.

Tone Your Skin

A skin toner does three things: Balances your skin, gives much needed hydration back to your skin, and can gently exfoliate (see the next step for more on exfoliation). An astringent toner is the key to taking care of pores and maximizing a glowing complexion.

Toners are water based and nothing is more natural as a toner than a hydrosol, especially rose (for all skin types), frankincense (for mature skin types) or lemon tea tree (for oily skin types).

Exfoliate Your Skin

A gentle scrub (for face or body) can be a great tool in exfoliating your skin. We have a whole blog dedicated to How to Exfoliate Your Skin Naturally, including benefits, how to exfoliate, and which products to use! In short, exfoliating your skin once or twice or week will help your skin to both look its best and act its best.

Alternatively, go get a professional holistic facial, which will “deep clean” your face.

Moisturize Your Skin

Moisturizing your skin helps to “lock in” the moisture of the toning stage of your skincare routine. You can moisturize with a cream or an oil, but most oils will lock in more benefits vs. creams. Many creams are water-based, and will continue to add more water to the mix, drawing away those precious moisturizing benefits.

Use a high-quality oil skincare oil for this stage of the process, and your skin will thank you! And we’ve created the perfect mix of oils in our Restore Face Oil. This is an expertly blended mix of rosehip, avocado, evening primrose, and sweet almond oils, topped off with lavender, vetiver, and Roman chamomile essential oils. Sounds amazing? Smells amazing, too!

And don’t forget your eyes in the moisturizing process. The skin around your eyes is delicate and prone to dark circles, wrinkles, puffiness, and fine lines. Use only eye serums which have been specifically created for this fragile area – such as our Revital-eyes Serum or Bright Eyes Serum. Apply daily as part of your routine.

Bright, Glowing Skin for the New Year

Your skin is precious. It is vital. To function well, it needs to be taken care of on a regular basis. And if you take care of it, it will reward you with new, bright, glowing skin! As we mentioned, you get new skin every 28 days anyway. So why not make it stand out from the crowd – and promote a happier, healthier you this year!
